Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska but grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at the University of Michigan and then enrolled in Yale Law University. After the battle of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the US Reserves Navy and served in the army from 1942 to 1946. After 4 years, Ford was discharged from the army with the rank of major. Ford began his political career in 1949 as a US congressman representing Michigan’s 5th Congressional district.
