Each winter, when curled up in a nest, the brown bear had to go on a hunger strike that lasted for months. During hibernation, bears will not eat or drink and they lose a third of their body weight. Their winter survival depends on the accumulation of an abundant fat reserve before entering the cave. Katmai’s brown bears are fattest in late summer and early fall after trying to satisfy their hunger all winter last year.
